Owen Szabo will be 3 on 7/4/19. At 15 months old, Owen was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after becoming seriously ill. Owen was admitted to PICU in severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This took a huge toll on his little body and started a series of doctors visits, therapy, testing and several surgeries. Multiple other diagnoses followed, adrenal insufficiency, polydipsia, polyuria, nephromegaly both kidneys, renal calyceal dilation, proteinuria, Mutation in the SYN1 gene, delayed social development, speech disorder, acute reaction to stress, other development disorders of speech and language and the latest diagnosis, Autism spectrum disorder with accompanying language impairment requiring substantial support (level 2-3) . Owen had started speaking and had a good start to his vocabulary and seemed to lose all of that after DKA. He has had to start all over again with the help of multiple therapies including 30 hours a week of ABA, in addition to speech and occupational therapy. His schedule is full weekly of those therapies as well as other doctor appointment for his complex medical issues.
Carol and Jordan have had to become a pancreas for Owen. Although Owen wears a continuous Glucose monitor (CGM) to read his blood glucose levels every 5 minutes and now has an omnipod, which is a insulin pump, they are still required to test and treat him multiple times daily. Carol also has to get Owen to all therapy and doctor appointments, requiring several drop offs and pickups a day. In addition, Carol has to remain within a safe range in case Owen needs treatment or has a medical emergency, meaning she has had to limit her service area to clients in order to be able to quickly reach Owen. There have also been increased medical care costs in treating Owens complex medical needs. This has caused a financial hardship on their family. Lets help them out by attending this great event.
